Dating back to the 16th century, Cluny Castle has been lived in, cared for, and passed down through the same family for over 400 years. It is not a restored country house hotel or managed estate; it is a family home, and that is felt from the moment you cross the threshold. 

Cluny is available for a limited number of weddings, private stays, and gatherings each year—each as personal and private as the last, with a small, dedicated team that brings warmth and genuine care to every visit.

Centuries of history, very much still alive.

What began as a fortified tower house has evolved over the centuries into the romantic castellated mansion seen today—most notably through extensive additions made in 1820 by Aberdeen architect John Smith. The castle has been passed down through the Gordons of Cluny since the 16th century, and each generation has left its mark, though the character of the place has endured throughout: turrets, stonework, woodland, water, and long views across the Aberdeenshire landscape.

One of Cluny's most remarkable features is its private chapel, completed in 1870 and richly decorated in the Gothic Revival style. Long regarded as one of the castle's great architectural treasures, it remains an atmospheric space, whether used for ceremonies, music, or simply discovered during a stay.

The castle has also lived through periods of change and restoration, including fire damage in the early 20th century, and has emerged from each with its story intact. Today, Cluny remains what it has always been: a private family home. Cosmo and Bronya Linzee Gordon live here with their family and continue the work of caring for the castle, chapel, grounds and wider estate that each generation before them has undertaken, while opening its doors for weddings, private stays, and gatherings that allow others to experience the place for themselves.

Cluny is not a museum. It is a living estate—one that has always evolved, and must continue to do so if it is to be cared for properly and passed on to the next generation in good order.

That means continuing to restore and maintain the historic buildings while investing in the surrounding landscape, woodland, and natural environment—ensuring the grounds, wetlands, and parkland thrive alongside the built heritage. Part of Cluny's future also lies in remaining closely connected to the local community, supporting thoughtful projects that bring wider benefit and allow the estate to evolve in a positive and sustainable way.

At the heart of that vision is a simple aim: to ensure Cluny continues to be lived in, cared for, and shared in a way that respects its past, enriches its landscape, and secures its future.
